EMDR treatment
What is EMDR?
EMDR is an extremely effective treatment method for people suffering from the consequences of stressful and traumatic experiences. EMDR has been scientifically recognised as a psychotherapeutic method in Germany since 2006.
The letters stand for “Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing” – which translates as “desensitisation and reprocessing through eye movements”.
When is EMDR treatment appropriate?
Would you like to overcome your fear because you suffer from it and a future dental treatment would be very important to you for health or aesthetic reasons?
Are measures such as trusting dialogue and the provision of information by the dentist as well as distraction through music or video during treatment not enough?
Then EMDR may be your method of choice. Patients respond particularly well to EMDR if the dental treatment anxiety can be traced back to a specific key situation. In most cases, this is a traumatic experience during past medical treatment – often in childhood.
Cooperation with EMDR coach Katja Planert
An initial consultation takes place at the Leipziger14 dental practice. The EMDR treatment itself is carried out on premises outside the practice.
Prerequisites for EMDR treatment
- Stable coping with everyday life
- No clearly limited physical resilience (e.g. heart disease)
- No seizure disorders (e.g. epilepsy)
- No acute psychosis
Counselling interview
EMDR treatment procedure
During the treatment, old stressful memories are brought to the surface for a short time – with structured guidance -, reconnected and emotionally processed, and then “packed away” into long-term memory as manageable memories.
The duration of therapy varies from person to person – however, 3-5 sessions are usually sufficient to significantly alleviate the fear of dental treatment.
Are there any side effects?
- During the sessions, intense emotions and physical sensations may arise that are related to the experience being worked on – so-called abreactions.
- After an EMDR session, the brain can continue with the treatment of stressful experiences. As part of your own post-processing, you may experience new dreams, intense memories and feelings in the first few days after the session.
- The “fear of fear” can produce physical anxiety symptoms during the EMDR treatment period, which are experienced as stressful.
In the first EMDR session, you will be prepared for possible side effects and given exercises that will make you feel safe and strengthen your sense of control.
